No! There is nothing wrong with your child's brain. Their brain is just 'wired' differently than a non-dyslexic. Your child's brain is wired in such a way that gives them other unique strengths in spatial ability, creativity, and other areas.

Is there something wrong with my child's brain?

Dyslexia is not a vision or an eye tracking problem, a result of being lazy or a lack of intelligence! Dyslexia is characterized by weaknesses in phonological processing, accuracy, fluency and automaticity, and sometimes comprehension, while reading printed text.

Both Andrea and Emily will absolutely help you advocate for your child with their school and teachers! It's not that your school and teachers don't want to help; they often just don't have the specific training. We can help educate them, but more importantly, we can help ensure your student's right to an education that works for them is being met.

Will you work with my student's school and teachers?

Without a doubt! If you've read our "Dyslexic or Not?" page and your child fits the description, you should have your student evaluated.

Emily does offer evaluation services, but we also highly recommend The Colorado Literacy and Learning Center.

Should my child be evaluated?

You may have heard that your child needs an Orton-Gillingham based program to help with dyslexia. This is absolutely true! Researcher, Sam Orton, and teacher, Anna Gillingham, worked together in the very early days of trying to assist people who couldn't read because of dyslexia. Their work is the basis on which reading programs for dyslexics should be based.

Do not hire a reading tutor who is not offering an Orton-Gilllingham based program BUT mostly importantly be sure the therapist has had extensive professional training !

What is Orton-Gillingham About?
